The best free file sharing sites in 2026 — tested and compared

Every "best free file sharing" list repeats the same marketing numbers. This one is built from actually uploading files to these services and checking what came back — the size they accept, whether the link survives, and whether you get the file itself or a landing page.

What actually matters when comparing

Size limits get all the attention, but three other things decide whether a service is any good for you:

Retention. A 10 GB limit is worthless if the file vanishes in 24 hours.
Direct links. Some services give you the file URL; others only a page with a download button. Direct links matter for previews, embedding and download managers.
Monthly quotas. A per-transfer limit is not the same as a monthly cap. Some services allow one big file and then block you for the rest of the month.

Which one for which job

Sending something huge once. Gofile, Filebin or send.cm. They are the only ones in this list without a practical size ceiling, and any of them will take a 10 GB archive.

Something that needs to stay online for weeks. WaifuVault for anything under 512 MB, or your own cloud storage above that. Most free services are built for short-term transfers, not archiving.

Images or video you want to preview or embed. You need a direct link, so WaifuVault, kappa.lol or Filebin. Services that only give you a page cannot be embedded anywhere.

A quick share with a colleague. Almost anything works. Pick by retention: if they will open it today, tmpfiles is fine; if next week, pick something longer.

Where WeTransfer sits now

WeTransfer used to be the default answer, and it is still polished. But its free tier tightened noticeably: as of 2026 it allows 3 GB per transfer, files expire after 3 days, and there is a monthly quota of around 10 transfers. It also asks for an email address.

That is a reasonable product — it is just no longer the most generous free option, which is worth knowing before you build a habit around it.

The catch nobody mentions

Free hosting is free because the host can delete your file whenever it wants. Every service in this table can, and eventually will.

There are two sane responses:

Mirror it. Upload the same file to two services. If one drops it, the other still works.
Check before you rely on it. Before sending an important link to a client, open it yourself.
